Today was Pink Shirt day and our class certainly recognized the day. We had a lot of pink in our room. It was great to see some individual initiatives to promote anti bullying with the posters they made on their own time. We read the story A Pound of Cheese for April, that illustrates the characteristics of bullying , bystander's and victim's behaviours. We have read several books this term that illustrate bullying behaviours, and how we can best not become a victim by standing tall to the bully by saying, "Don't say that/do that to me. It bothers me." Turn around and walk away tall with self talk about how strong/smart/kind/friendly... you are. Take the power away from the bully. We encourage the students to practice this on the playground or classroom when they feel they have been spoken to with unkind words or treated in a negative way. We still want the students to be able to talk to us so we can support them in resolving conflicts.
Every Wednesday afternoon is Wonder Wednesday where we will explore a question from the website Wonderopolis. I post the question, then students have to create questions before knowing any of the answers. Once we have a set of questions, we read an article to see if we can answer any of the questions we created. We are working towards creating our own individual inquiry question where we will create questions and then research. On Wednesday, our class travelled back to pioneer times at the Langley Centennial Museum. We learned what life was like as a pioneer child 100 years ago. When asked whether they would prefer to live during pioneer times or present times, most of us said now because the pioneer children had a lot of chores and responsibilities. A few of actually would prefer pioneer times because of the chores they were able to do. We had an opportunity to make butter, chop wood, milk a cow, iron, go to school (a favourite activity), deposit money in the bank and go to the General Store.
