Hazardous Household Products Workshop
Ms. J from LEPPS came to our classroom to talk to us about some of the hazardous products we can find in our homes and how to identify the symbols on the products. Some products don't have symbols, but they use the words Caution, Danger and Warning. We talked about how the hazardous products affect our environment, so we made a Greener Cleaner product that is safer cleaning product. Mrs. O'Byrne and Mrs. Bentley love using it to clean the boards in the classroom. The recipe for the Greener Cleaner is:
1 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 tsp dishsoap
1/4 tsp essential oil
1 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 tsp dishsoap
1/4 tsp essential oil

Trash Avengers Workshop
Mrs. Atherton and Miss Erin from LEPPS came to our classroom to teach us about our responsibility in keeping our environment clean and healthy. We were garbage detectives and had to identify which items were not garbage and could be recycled rather than thrown into the garbage. We learned that our household trash should be separated into mixed paper, newsprint, organic waste, blue box (plastic, metal, and glass), and garbage. Rhonda the Red Wriggler Worm helps to decompose our organic waste. A few of us were brave enough to hold a red wriggler worm.
Hallowe'en Fun
A super fun day was had by everyone today! Lots of fun at the Hallowe'en Carnival playing games, walking through a haunted tunnel, and eating lots cupcakes, popcorn and candy. In the afternoon we carved our pumpkins, lit a tea light inside the pumpkins, turned out the lights and read a Hallowe'en story.
Thanksgiving Sharing Soup
Our annual class tradition of creating a Sharing Soup in honour of Thanksgiving was a great hit this year. It was the first year that one of our classes finished off the whole pot of soup. Several students were asking for a third helping :). It's always a mystery as to what kind of soup we are making because it depends on which ingredients everyone brings that day. First we sautéed onions and celery, then slowly added peppers, carrots, peas, tomatoes, pasta, lentils, potatoes, and a few other vegetables. It was difficult to concentrate on our work as the aroma from the simmering soup in the classroom was distracting us. We knew it was going to be a great soup when we heard other people in the hallway commenting on the aroma. Before enjoying the soup, everyone took a turn to share what they are most thankful for this year, and many comments were being thankful for their families. Our family this year is very thankful for the safe arrival, health and joy of our beautiful granddaughter Zoe, who was 5 weeks old on Thanksgiving.
Flip City Gymnastics
For the past three weeks our class has been going to Flip City Gymnastics to learn how to tumble over, under and on mats, do various tricks on a variety of trampolines, travel on a variety apparatus, and spin around parallel bars. There is always a lot of excitement when we get there, and it's exciting for us to see the kids try something new (even though they feel a bit hesitant at first) and to see how proud they are of themselves by not giving up!
