Mastering Basic Math Facts
Everyday we practise our basic addition and subtraction facts to 15 in a variety of ways. By the end of the year, the grade two students should be able to know their basic facts with speed and accuracy (not using their fingers and toes to count on).
In September, we start practising:
- adding doubles (6+6=12) ask the students about the Doubles Rap song
- adding 1 (9+1=10)
- get to zero (8-8=0)
- doubles plus/minus one (4+4=8, then 4+5=9)
Coming up:
- making 10 (2+8, 3+7...)
- +9/+10 (8+5, 9+5...)
- +2 (5+2, 7+2...)
A few ideas to build speed and accuracy for basic math facts:
- see Resources tab for some samples of math drill sheets
- flashcards
- Snap with a deck of cards (eg. turn over a card - double it/double plus 1...)
- War - two split a deck of cards in two, people turn over their top card, first person to add/subtract wins the cards)
- add/subtract dominoes
- download apps (we use Math Duel, Flash to Pass)
- we have found some games on www.beam.co.uk/mathsofthemonth.php
